As a way to participate in the Oakwood “Centennial Celebration”, the Lutheran Church of Our Savior is hosting tours of the Frederick Patterson House (parish house) on Saturday, July 12, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Frederick Patterson was the son of John Patterson, founder of the National Cash Register Company (NCR). An old-fashioned ice cream social will also be held on the house grounds. This event is open to all in the community and no reservations are needed. The church is located at 155 E. Thruston Blvd. in Oakwood. |

The city of Oakwood will conduct a grand opening of the newly reconstructed park and playground at Orchardly Park at 5 p.m. on Monday, June 30. The big event will take place in the park located at the corner of Delaine Avenue and Orchard Drive. Citizens are invited and encouraged to attend. |

Oakwood’s 2004 Comprehensive Plan documents the City’s need for empty-nester housing. The housing development at Sugar Camp focuses specifically on this need and includes condominiums, patio homes and towne homes with floor plans designed for empty-nesters and retirees. The housing is being created to address citizen desires for homes that conveniently accommodate their leisure and travel lifestyles and includes a homeowner’s association that sees to the maintenance of exterior areas. Oakwood has very few housing options of this type, far fewer than neighboring suburbs, yet many long-time residents are looking for it. They want to stay in Oakwood, but want available housing choices to match their needs. |

At their public meeting on April 7, Oakwood City Council received a request for the city to consider constructing a dog park at Creager Field. Creager Field is located at the north end of Shafor Boulevard just south of Irving Avenue. This request came at the same time that city officials had already given some thought to such a project. |

Plans are in place for a grand celebration of Oakwood’s 100th birthday. Targeted audiences include Oakwood residents – past, present and future – and friends and neighbors in the Dayton region. Led by co-chairs Madeline Iseli and Dick Good, the broad based volunteer leaders have designed a centennial celebration with wide appeal and open admission. The planning effort began over two years ago, has involved well over 100 citizens, and has included well over 100 meetings… get the theme? |

The city has been monitoring the ash trees in the right of ways and public spaces since the introduction of the Emerald Ash Borer and has not found any confirmed infestations. The city continues to monitor the trees on a regular basis. In 2007, Oakwood treated 102 trees in public area with an insecticide called Imicide. This year Oakwood will continue the EAB program by treating trees between the sidewalk and curb and in other right of way areas. This public area work will be done at no cost to property owners. |
