The Germantown Fire Department

Scott Anding, Fire Chief

Historically, the beginnings of the Germantown Fire Department dates to December 28, 1832, when an ordinance was passed which authorized the appointment of two men to serve as fire inspectors. Four months later, a follow-up ordinance was passed requiring each household to be equipped with a leather fire bucket.

In May 1836, the Germantown Fire Engine and Hose Co. was organized to operate on a five-year basis. In November of the same year, another ordinance was passed requiring all able-bodied men and women to respond to fire alarms with their fire bucket.

Today the Germantown Fire Department provides fire prevention, fire suppression, and rescue services utilizing paid-on-call firefighters. We are allowed to be staffed with 28 members, including one full time position: Fire Chief.

Our major resources include: a 75 ft. Quint Ladder, 1 Engine, 1 Interface Pumper, 1 Engine/Tanker, 1 Light Truck, 1 Utility Vehicle, and 1 staff vehicle. Other key resources include: thermal imaging devices, 4-inch diameter supply hose, hazardous materials equipment, Class A – B foam and Integrated PASS/SCBA.

Germantown Fire Department runs an average of 200 – 300 fire related calls per year and is dispatched by the Germantown Police Department. The Germantown Rescue Squad who average 800 – 900 emergency medial calls per year provide the EMS service. We also work very closely with the Germantown Police Department and the German Township Police Department. It is not uncommon to be working with any of the different agencies or even all of them depending on the location of the call and resources available.

Germantown Fire Department also works closely with our Mutual Aid fire departments from Farmersville, Gratis, Miamisburg, Miami Township, Jefferson Township, Carlisle, Madison Township, New Lebanon and the Montgomery County Special Response Unit.

All of our staff is (at a minimum) Volunteer Basic and First Responder certified, however, more have furthered their education / training to the Firefighter 1 - 2 levels and EMT.  For Hazardous Materials certification all staff members are trained to the Hazardous Materials Awareness level while others have continued on to acquire the Operational and Technician certifications.  Members have also taken other classes to receive certification(s) in; fire investigations, auto extrication, apparatus operator, inspector and fire officer.

Thank you for visiting our web page, and should you have any questions please do not hesitate to give us a call.
