38. Newport/Kindle House

89 S. Main St.

This mid-1830s Federal style house is an outstanding example of limestone craftsmanship. Built by Daniel Newport, the two-story house was typical of other early village houses; one-room first floor, fireplace and cupboards on the south wall, and an enclosed, winding stairway that led to the sleeping quarters above. The wood frame addition is of early vintage. Joseph Kindle purchased the house in 1842. He served as justice of the peace for 21 years. The stone portion was restored in the early 1960s.  For more information on our stone houses.
