14. Jacob McCracken House
59 E. Franklin St.
![]() |
Jacob McCracken bought this lot
from Aaron Nutt in 1833 and built the two-story Federal Style frame house with a
limestone foundation and partial cellar on the east. The
cellar has a unique limestone floor. The roof was changed in the
mid-nineteenth century and has Greek Revival returns. The front
gable was added after the Civil War. In 1900, a renovation changed the
house style to Georgian Revival, adding a two-story frame section at the
back, Doric columns on the porch and enlarging the windows.
Bought by the Centerville United Methodist Church in 1970, the house served
as housing for student ministers, a site for youth programs and storage.
In 1998, new owners bought and restored the house as their residence. The house is also referred to as the "Sampler House" by local historians because of an intricate sampler traditionally stitched in 1840 by Jacob's daughter, 13 year old Anna Mary McCracken. |
