THE RURAL HISTORY
PROJECT
One day in late October 2001, Jean Simpson, Education Coordinator for the Centerville-Washington Township Historical Society, was walking along W. Franklin Street in Centerville when she spied an old, run-down chicken house. The chicken house sat in the backyard of 43 W. Franklin St., a property which had just been sold. Jean taught local history to Centerville City Schools elementary classes and wanted to add our rural history to the curriculum. She needed an appropriate venue to do this. This chicken house might be just the thing! After some measuring (the house would fit in the Walton House backyard) and checking (the City of Centerville gave the approval for the house to be moved to the backyard) and talking to the new owners (they agreed to donate the house to the Society) the RURAL HISTORY PROJECT was hatched.
