17. Zenas Hines House

10 Maple Ave.

This house is an excellent example of a laborer's home, sometimes called a "pauper's House" because it was made with the cheapest available wood.  Zenas Hines purchased this property in 1838 and built his home soon after. The original house, the center portion, is a wood frame structure built on a rubble foundation and has the high, narrow proportions of early Federal architecture in this area. The south wing was added in the late 1880s and the garage, kitchen, and porch (now enclosed) after 1930.
