5. Robert McEwen

79 W. Franklin St.

The Robert McEwen house was built in 1833 at the time of his marriage.  He was active in early politics, serving as the first Clerk of Centerville (1830), Clerk of Washington Township (1892-32), and as a Representative to the Ohio Legislature (1859).  The house is built of native limestone, perhaps quarried in the back yard. If you look closely, the stones on the building front are neatly margined and have a decorative hatching on them. This house is similar in design to the Walton House, however, it is only one story, and one front door has been changed to a window.  One fireplace has been completely closed, and additions have been made to the rear of the house.  See more information on our stone houses.
