James Harris owned a dry goods and variety store at the northwest corner of
Main and Franklin, and was a leading pork packer in the 1830s. He
purchased this lot in 1833 and built the stone house around 1838. The
frame rear addition was added in the late 1800s and the side porch was
enclosed in 1977.
Notice the differences in the texture of the stone between the front and side walls. The
deep window wells show the thickness of the walls. In 1976, owners received a
Landmark Award from the Historical Society for their restoration work on the
house, which included the removal of the plaster that had covered the
limestone structure. The building has been the site of many businesses
