28. Benjamin Robbins House

81 N. Main St.

The original one-story stone house, located to the rear of the main house, was built in 1803. The stone house replaced a log cabin (c. 1799) that stood on this site but was destroyed in a violent storm. The more decorative and sophisticated two-story section at the front may have been added around 1820. Remnants of the old springhouse in the rear yard are still visible, and springwater still flows feeding a pond a short distance away. In 1880, the lot at the corner of North St. (Ridgeway Rd.) and Main St. was sold to the Hamlet of Centerville and was the site of the Centerville's first jail. The jail stood on this lot until about 1900.  For more information on our stone houses.
